Experimental film (10 mins)

In an environment barren of almost all life, where heat and blinding light rule all, a woman slowly burns in the sun. She stands still and muted. Unable to utter words with sound, she mourns over the paradoxes and deadends in her life. Out of loneliness and shame, she buries herself to hide away from the burning rays and becomes assimilated into the landscape. All her questions remain unanswered but she is not all alone.

Our visual and dramaturgical research was to choreograph and film the female body as landscape and to work with the juxtaposition of BNW digital filming and 35mm film photography. The body either feels microscopic, unimportant and lost in the frame's immense negative space or struggles to fit the frame. Surrounded by an oppressive, indifferent and homogenous male group, she endures in her loneliness as she slowly realises time passes and nothing changes. We were greatly motivated by Samuel Beckett's "Happy Days" and the relationship between the female protagonist and her husband. We were also inspired by Beckett's approach to language as incapable of fully communicating the tragedy human condition. This is why the Womans' monologue is only seen through written text, and only heard in the dark in the end of the film.
